Wednesday in Holy Week
Readings: Is 50:4-9. ps 68:8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34, R/v 14. Mt 26:14-25.

Spy Wednesday we call it – for Judas has left his mark on our calendars. The pain of his betrayal is to be felt in the account of Saint Matthew’s Gospel. And thirty pieces of silver goes into language currency ever since. At the end of this Lent, which has seen us trying to purify ourselves of all that is not Christian, these thirty pieces of silver come before us as a warning.

The Seventh Station: Jesus Falls for the Second Time

We Remember the Cross of Jesus

Stretched to breaking point by
his awful scourging, bowed
under the weight of the cross,
worn out by the abandonment of
all his friends, Jesus stumbles

We Name the Crosses of Today

All around us people are overburdened by the crosses they
carry; they struggle and sometimes fall. There are those
who have lost their jobs and feel that they have little hope
of finding another, those who live with the prospect of
unemployment, and those who struggle to keep others in
work. There are those who suffer because of failures in our
financial, health and political systems. Jesus is with each
one of us however we fall and there he chooses to love and
save us.

We Pray

Jesus, from deep within yourself, you found the courage and
strength to get up once again and continue the journey. Give
us your strength to keep going even when hope is dim.

Holy Week
During Holy Week, the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his messianic entrance into Jerusalem. The Lenten season lasts until Thursday of this week. The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations.
