‘…the message of Holy Week is one of reassurance of God’s ever-present love for us, a love that has redeemed us and gained us everlasting life. Therefore, I invite people throughout the Diocese of Clogher to prayerfully gather and celebrate this reality’
The Bishop of Clogher, Bishop Larry Duffy, invites everyone to take part in the celebration of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection this Lent. ‘The Easter Triduum from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday reminds us of God’s infinite love and mercy; in these days we re-live the journey to Calvary, the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross – a sacrifice which sets us free. From the Cross we move to the empty tomb of Easter Sunday morning. These days offer us an opportunity to renew our own life of faith in Christ Jesus our Lord. It is not just a recalling of historical events. Through the sacraments, especially the sacrifice of the Mass, we make present and real the saving power of Christ. That is what these days celebrate – the saving power of Christ’s death and resurrection for us, his Church, today’.
Bishop Duffy added that the celebrations this year are particularly special, given that it is the first time in three years that we have been able to gather physically as a community of faith to celebrate Holy Week. ‘In these days of anguish and challenge for so many in our world – especially those who are struggling in any way, and mindful too of the people of Ukraine – the message of Holy Week is one of reassurance of God’s ever-present love for us, a love that has redeemed us and gained us everlasting life. Therefore, I invite people throughout the Diocese of Clogher to prayerfully gather and celebrate this reality’, he said.
The Easter Triduum begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and lasts until the evening of Easter Sunday. It is celebrated as one continuous liturgy, representing one indivisible mystery – the Paschal mystery of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Hence there is no concluding rite or blessing at the end of the liturgy on Holy Thursday or Good Friday. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. On Holy Saturday, during the Easter Vigil, the joyful word “Alleluia!” rings out once more. The Lord has truly risen! The season of Easter then lasts for fifty days, until Pentecost.
The following are the arrangements for the celebration of the Easter Triduum in St Macartan’s Cathedral (led by Bishop Duffy) and across the various parishes of the Diocese of Clogher. This is the first year since 2019 that will be able to come together as faith communities to celebrate the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth. These days bring to a conclusion the Lenten season.
