The Digital Parish – Sister Lucy Conway

21 Apr 2020

Sister Lucy Conway:

Q1. How are you coping with lockdown/social distancing?

We are coping very well with the lockdown, as Monastics we are an enclosed community. As a contemplative order we remain inside the monastery except for in exceptional circumstances. There are 14 sisters in our community. Our day begins at 6.30am and most of it is spent in silence and prayer. In that respect, not much has changed in daily life since Covid-19.

Q2. What do you miss most?
We certainly miss our parishioners, but we continue to reach out via webcam to them.

I missed being able to give Sister Jacinta an embrace on her 92nd birthday recently and similarly not being able to welcome Sister Maura with an embrace on her return from Rome nearly a month ago

Q3. How are you reaching out online as a religious? Is there anything you will continue online once lockdown is over?

We are reaching our via our webcam and so far this month almost 40,000 people have joined us on the webcam for the Divine Office and Mass daily.

After the Covid-19 Pandemic we will continue to reach out to the world as we’ve always done but our hearts break for all who are suffering.

We salute and pray for all the frontline workers giving so much of themselves – they’re the heroes

Q4. What is the first thing you will do after lockdown and when social distancing is over?

I will give each sister a hug for being so wonderful
They are wonderful anyway but during the pandemic it seemed I was more alert to the goodness in everyone

Q5. Have you a message for people in need of hope and encouragement at this time?

Don’t let fear cripple you. Know that God is with us every step of the way.
