A message of sympathy from Archbishop Eamon Martin at the Funeral Mass for the State Funeral of Garda Anthony Golden RIP

15 Oct 2015

On behalf of Archbishop Eamon Martin, Dean Colum Curry, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Armagh, delivered the following message at the Funeral Mass of the late Anthony Golden RIP:

Dear Nicola, Lucy, Alex and Andrew,

I am here in Rome where bishops from all over the world have gathered with Pope Francis to reflect on the meaning and importance of the family in today’s world.

I cannot imagine the terrible pain and loss that you are feeling these days.

I’m thinking of Tony’s mother and father, sister and brothers.

Nicola I am also thinking of your parents and sister, and all the members of your extended families.

I know also that Tony’s colleagues in An Garda Siochana were like a family to him, and the communities of Omeath and Blackrock considered him as one of their own.

I am with you in thought and prayer as you gather today, as a Christian family, to comfort one another, to thank God for Tony’s goodness, and to honour his life.

It was typical of Tony, as a true guardian of the peace, to reach out so unselfishly to someone who needed his help. We continue to pray for Siobhan’s recovery.

May God reward him and comfort all of you in your grief.

+ Eamon Martin
