PRESS RELEASE

1 MARCH 2006

ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN WELCOMES THE APPOINTMENT

OF NEW BISHOP OF FERNS

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Diarmuid Martin, welcomes the appointment of
Father Denis Brennan as new Bishop of Ferns. Archbishop Martin wishes Father
Brennan every grace and blessing as he takes on his new ministry and assures
his prayers and support for the new Bishop and for the entire Diocese of Ferns.

The new Bishop, a priest of the Diocese of Ferns, has worked very closely
with Bishop Eamonn Walsh, the Apostolic Administrator, in effecting forward
looking policies to ensure that the highest standards in child protection
are upheld and that the recommendations of the Ferns Report are implemented.
The appointment of Father Brennan is a clear endorsement of the policies
adopted by Bishop Walsh and the process of renewal taking place in the
Diocese.

Archbishop Martin takes the occasion also to restate his appreciation of the
extraordinary contribution Bishop Walsh has made during his time as Apostolic
Administrator of Ferns, while not in any way neglecting his intense ministry
as Auxiliary Bishop in Dublin. The Archbishop feels certain the Archdiocese
of Dublin will benefit enormously from the experience and expertise which
Bishop Walsh acquired during his ministry in Ferns.
