PRESS RELEASE

STATEMENT OF MOST REV LAURENCE FORRISTAL, BISHOP OF OSSORY

ON THE APPOINTMENT OF MOST REV MARTIN DRENNAN AS BISHOP OF GALWAY

Together with the priests and people of the Diocese of Ossory, I am very
pleased that the Holy Father has appointed Bishop Martin Drennan as Bishop
of Galway. Bishop Drennan, a native of the parish of Templeorum, was ordained
priest for the Diocese of Ossory in 1968. In 1973 after post-ordination
studies in Rome he became curate in the Parish of Ballycallan and two
years later a member of the teaching staff in St Kieran’s Seminary in
Kilkenny. Later, before his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin
in 1997, he was Spiritual Director in the Irish College Rome and later
Professor of Saced Scripture in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

With his background in pastoral work and priestly formation we can be
confident that he will continue the great work of his predecessor Bishop
James McLoughlin in building up the Kingdom of God in the Diocese of
Galway.

We wish Bishop Drennan well and we pray that God will bless him in his
new ministry in the Irish Church.
