PRESS RELEASE

23 MAY 2005

COMMENTS OF ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN ON THE APPOINTMENT

OF DR MARTIN DRENNAN AS NEW BISHOP OF GALWAY

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Diarmuid Martin, has offered his prayers and
best wishes to the newly appointed Bishop of Galway, Dr. Martin Drennan.

Archbishop Martin noted that Bishop Drennan had won great respect from the
priests and people since his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin in
1997 for his pastoral ministry and preaching of the Gospel.  Bishop Drennan
has dedicated himself to providing pastoral and spiritual support to priests,
especially in the specific area of the Diocese assigned to him.

Bishop Drennan’s biblical, theological, spiritual, human qualities and personal
integrity will be missed in Dublin.  Archbishop Martin prayed that these same
qualities may now flourish in the new pastoral challenges opening in the Diocese
of Galway.

At the same time, Archbishop Martin expressed his best wishes to Bishop James
McLaughlin, outgoing Bishop of Galway, praying that his health may improve to
allow him to enjoy many years of fruitful retirement.
