PRESS RELEASE
21 MARCH 2003
ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE MAYNOOTH TO HOST
EUROPEAN SOCCER TOURNAMENT
EURO FEIS – MAYNOOTH 2003
St. Patrick’s College Maynooth will host the 19th European Seminary Soccer Tournament
from 28th – 30th March 2003. Over 200 seminarians from 7 countries will take part in
this tournament. Teams will travel to Maynooth from Poland, Slovenia, Italy, France,
Belgium, Germany, England and from within Ireland.
In recent years the tournament has been held in Durham, Paris and last year was held
in Toulon. Over the past few years the number of teams taking part has increased and
there has been a lot of interest in the tournament from the seminaries in Eastern
European Countries. Two Polish teams have already shown an interest in hosting next
year’s tournament.
Chris O’Donnell, captain of the Maynooth team last year, said: ‘Taking part in this
tournament gives us the opportunity to meet with others who are preparing for priesthood
and to experience different cultures. It is wonderful that Maynooth has been given the
opportunity to host the tournament and welcome fellow seminarians from all over Europe.’
Although this is the 19th tournament, Maynooth has only been taking part since 1997 but
in that time it has won the tournament 4 times. Last year’s winners were a seminary from
Poland.
A website has been set up with information on the tournament and a useful links section
