Archbishop Seán Brady pays tribute to missionary killed in the Philippines

30 August 2001

I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely death of Fr Rufus Halley, a member of the Missionary Society of St Columban, in the Philippines on Tuesday, 28 August. On behalf of the Irish Episcopal Conference, I extend to his family and to his Columban confreres my heartfelt sympathy on their bereavement and the assurance of my prayers.

Fr Halley’s priestly ministry was inspired by the Beatitudes: “Happy are the poor in spirit…Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right….Happy the peacemakers..” (Matthew 5). I pray that his example will be an inspiration for all, and especially for our young people.

His death is also a striking reminder of the extraordinary commitment, faith and generosity of our Irish missionaries throughout the world. May we continue to support them in every way possible, and especially with our prayers.

May he rest in peace.
