Arrival of New Apostolic Nuncio toIreland

Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, Ireland’s newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio will arrive in Ireland on Tuesday 16 January 2001. Archbishop Lazzarotto’s appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland was announced on 11th November 2000.

The following programme has been arranged:

TUESDAY 16th JANUARY

Archbishop Lazzarotto arrives at Dublin Airport at 20:25 hrs on flight EI 505 from Rome. He will be received at Dublin Airport by Archbishop Seán Brady, President of the Irish Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Desmond Connell, Monsignor Anselmo Guido Pecorari, the Charge d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature, and a representative of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

THURSDAY 18th JANUARY

The Credential Letters will be presented by the new Apostolic Nuncio to President Mary McAleese at Aras an Uachtarain at 11:00am.

FRIDAY 19th JANUARY

Archbishop Lazzarotto will deliver the New Years Greetings on behalf of the Diplomatic Corps (in his capacity as Dean
of the Diplomatic Corps) to President Mc Aleese at 11:00am in Aras an Uachtarain.

SUNDAY 28th JANUARY

A Liturgical Reception of the new Apostolic Nuncio, hosted by the Archbishop of Dublin Dr. Desmond Connell, will take
place at Saint Mary’s Pro Cathedral, Dublin, at 6:30pm in the presence of Government representatives, the Diplomatic
Corps and the President of the Irish Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Seán Brady. Archbishop Lazzarotto will be the
principal celebrant and will preach the homily.

MONDAY 12th MARCH

Archbishop Lazzarotto will meet with all the members of the Irish Episcopal Conference at Saint Patrick’s College,
Maynooth on the occasion of the first General Meeting of the Conference for 2001.

Biography of Archbishop Lazzarotto follows:

His Excellency Most Reverend Giuseppe Lazzarotto was born in Carpane, Italy on the 24 May 1942. After his studies and
preparation for the priesthood in the Diocesan Seminary of Padua, he was ordained a priest for the same diocese on 1 April 1967.

He then undertook post-graduate studies in diplomacy at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, while simultaneously completing his studies by obtaining a Doctorate in Canon Law. He entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in 1971.

Archbishop Lazzarotto has served successively at the Pontifical Representations in Zambia and Malawi (1971-74), Belgium (1974-78), Cuba (1978-82), and Jerusalem (1982-84), and in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See (1984-94). He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the Hashermite Kingdom of Jordan and in the Republic of Iraq on 23 July 1994.
