Statement by Father Dermot Meehan, Diocesan Administrator, Diocese of Achonry on the death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan RIP

19 Jun 2020

Death always brings pain, leaves a major void in the lives of loved ones and raises questions. When death is unexpected and, as in the case of Detective Garda Colm Horkan, so tragic and unnecessary how much greater the loss felt, and the questions raised.

On behalf of the Diocese of Achonry – its priests, deacons, religious and laity, I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Colm’s father, sister and brothers, his wider family, to his Garda colleagues, his GAA club mates, his many friends and his hometown of Charlestown.

We acknowledge Colm’s selfless and giving commitment to the State, to An Garda Síochána and to the communities he served over the past twenty-four years.

In face of tragedy and uncertainty, we place our trust in the Lord and, in that trust and to the Lord, we bring our prayers for all at this time.

May Detective Garda Colm Horkan, a guardian of the peace, rest now in the peace he lived and died to protect.
