Bishop Ray Browne pays tribute to Bishop Eamonn Casey RIP

16 Mar 2017

The funeral Mass for the late Bishop Eamonn Casey RIP will take place today at 2.00pm in the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas, Galway.  Please see below the statement from Bishop Ray Browne:

It is with sadness that I learnt of the death of Bishop Eamonn Casey.  He ministered as bishop of the Diocese of Kerry from 1969 to 1976.  His years in our diocese were a time of growth and expansion in terms of social services for youth and the elderly, for the poor and disadvantaged, also services to marriage and family.  It also marked the time when the Kerry mission to Kenya commenced.  This period also saw the undertaking of a major renovation of our Cathedral.  Bishop Casey was the driving force in all of this.  It is hard to believe it is now over forty years since he was transferred to the Diocese of Galway.

On behalf of myself, Bishop Bill Murphy, Bishop Emeritus of Kerry and the whole community of our diocese, I sympathise with Bishop Casey’s family, his extended family and all who mourn him.

“O God, almighty Father, our faith professes that your Son died and rose again; mercifully grant, that your servant who has fallen asleep in Christ, may rejoice to rise again through Him.”
