Statement by Cardinal Séan Brady condemning the killing of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe

26 January 2013

I was deeply upset when I heard the news of the fatal shooting of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe last night at Bellurgan, County Louth. It has shocked and horrified the entire community.

The taking of innocent life is always wrong. Detective Garda Donohoe lost his life as he carried out his duty in the service of society. I offer my sympathy to his wife, Caroline, his son and daughter, extended family and to his Garda colleagues. I assure them of the support of my prayers and the prayers of the Church at this terrible time.

I add my voice to all who have appealed to those with information that could help the Gardaí in their enquiries, to come forward so that those responsible for this horrific crime may be speedily brought to justice. I appeal to all of society to unite in rejecting such wanton violence and criminal lack of respect for human life.
