50th International Eucharistic Congress Gathers and Remembers 1932

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress 2012 (IEC2012) is holding a special event to recognise people who participated in the 1932 Eucharistic Congress 80-years ago in Dublin.

A group of people who attended the 1932 Congress will gather at the Brennan Green Isle Hotel in Dublin on Monday, 23 April 2012 at 10am to share their first hand memories of the event and show any memorabilia they may have.

More than 100 invited guests from across Ireland will attend the ‘Gathering and Remembering 1932’ event to reminisce and tell their personal stories about travelling to and being part of the 1932 Congress.

An exhibition of 1932 memorabilia will be displayed during the ‘Gathering and Remembering 1932’ event.

The 1932 Congress was celebrated throughout Ireland, but the main events took place in Dublin.  Thousands of people joined the journey towards the Congress welcoming the Papal Legate, Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri, while streets and houses in Dublin were decorated with bunting and floral arrangements.  Similar to the preparations for IEC2012, all public buildings were lit up at night for the duration of the 1932 Congress week.

This 1932 commemorative event will commence on 23 April 2012 with a short screening of a Radharc film that illustrates the significance of the 1932 Congress for Ireland and for the hundreds of thousands of people who attended.  A traditional music session will be followed by the celebration of Mass and lunch.

There will be ample time to reminisce and evoke countless memories about the events that took place between 21 and 26 June 1932.  Many have vivid memories of Ireland’s international tenor and Papal Knight, Count John McCormack singing Panis Angelicus, as soloist at the final open air Mass in the Phoenix Park.

In conjunction with the ‘Gathering and Remembering 1932’ event, the 50th International Eucharistic Congress is facilitating anyone who attended the 1932 Congress to attend either the opening ceremony, including Mass in the RDS, on 10 June 2012, or the Statio Orbis, Final Mass, in Croke Park on 17 June 2012.
