Cardinal Seán Brady statement of congratulations to President-elect Michael D Higgins

Earlier today Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, sent a personal letter of congratulations, prayers and good wishes to Mr Michael D Higgins and his family on his election as the ninth President of Ireland.

In his letter Cardinal Brady spoke of his confidence in the ability of the people of Ireland, North and South, to meet the challenges facing them at this time.  Cardinal Brady offered his prayers for Mr Higgins as he seeks to give shape to that future in his role as President of Ireland.

Referring to ‘the core values of decency, generosity, community and care for others’ which Mr Higgins had spoken of ‘so eloquently’ throughout his campaign, Cardinal Brady wrote:

“In your desire to reignite our imagination with a rediscovery of these values as the common patrimony of our diverse society, I believe you will find in the Catholic community and its leaders a similar dedication and commitment. In seeking to move our society beyond a narrow individualism towards a reconnection of the person, community and society in a nation marked by respect for the dignity of every person and a concern for those who are in need, you will find a willing partner and a promoter of active citizenship.”

Cardinal Brady concluded by wishing Mr Higgins, his wife Sabina and their family ‘a happy and memorable day of inauguration as President of Ireland’ and every good wish for the years ahead.
