PRESS RELEASE
22 February 2008

Statement from Bishop Joseph Duffy, Bishop of Clogher, on the appointment of Mgr Noel Treanor as Bishop of Down and Connor.

It is a truly momentous occasion of joy and celebration for the priests and people of the diocese of Clogher that one of our priests, Mgr No l Treanor, has been chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Benedict, to serve the Church as Bishop of Down and Connor.

It is also an opportunity for us to express to the new bishop-elect our affection and our appreciation for his unfailing fidelity to his priesthood and his diocese in the many and varied ministries he has been given over the years. His contribution to bringing the values of the Gospel to the institutions of the European Union over twenty years has been acknowledged by many people, both inside and outside the Church.

We pray that God will be generous to him with His grace and support in his new responsibilities. Bishop-elect Treanor takes with him to Belfast our prayers and best wishes.
