PRESS RELEASE

24 MARCH 2005

BISHOPS AND RELIGIOUS ORDERS ESTABLISH STRATEGIC

PLANNING GROUP TO REVIEW CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Arising from the seminar hosted in Maynooth by the Irish Bishops’ Conference
and the Conference of Religious of Ireland on 7th and 8th February last,
entitled: “Interconference Meeting on Catholic Education in Contemporary
Ireland”, a Strategic Planning Group has been established to address all
aspects of Catholic education.

The task of the Group is to prepare a strategic plan for the provision
and development of Church interests in education.   This will involve
establishing priorities and clarifying Church intent in education and
school provision.   This will be set within a tight time-frame and will
lead to civil and canonical negotiations.

The development of this strategic review will include a wide ranging
consultation process which will invite input from partners in education.
