The Irish Bishops' Conference
This year, the Day for Life coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the
Pontificate of His Holiness John Paul II who was elected on 16th October 1978.
To mark the Pope’s Silver Jubilee, the Irish Bishops’ Conference has issued a
Pastoral Letter entitled “The Wonder of Life” summarising the Pope’s
teachings on various life issues.
100,000 copies of the Pastoral Letter are being circulated to parishes throughout
Ireland, and the text is also available in an Irish Language version.

Diocese of Down and Connor
To mark the twenty fifth anniversary of the election of Pope John Paul II
Professor James McEvoy of Maynooth addressed the priests of Down and Connor
on Wednesday 15th October on the teachings of Pope John Paul II. He had
addressed a large gathering in St. Malachy's College on the previous
evening.
The Bishop of Down and Connor, Most Rev Patrick Walsh, has sent a message
to the Holy Father with the heartfelt congratulations of the priests,
religious and lay faithful of the Diocese and an assurance of prayers
that the Lord will strengthen him at this time. Mass will be celebrated
in each parish of the Diocese for the Holy Father's intentions on
Wednesday 22nd October, the anniversary of the beginning of his pastoral
ministry.

Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin
The Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin has produced a commemorative prayer
card to mark the Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II's pontificate.
The Prayer Card will be circulated in parishes on the weekend of the
11th/12th October 2003. Included on the card is the Pope's Prayer to
Mary from his Encyclical Letter Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of
Life, 105) as well as an excerpt from the homily he delivered at the
beginning of his pastoral ministry on 22nd October 1978.
