THREAT OF WAR ON IRAQ

PRAYER FOR PEACE

News/Peace Initiatives

Special Day of Prayer for Peace - Friday 28th February 2003
The Archbishop of Dublin, Cardinal Desmond Connell, has asked that Friday
28th February 2003 be a special day of Prayer for Peace.

Calling for the special day of Prayer for Peace the Cardinal said:
The continuing crisis involving Iraq is a matter of grave concern for
world peace. In my recent statement on this crisis I said: "Moved by our
faith in a God who is the Creator and Father of all, the Church insistently
urges everyone to prayer so that the divine Goodness may free us from war.
Each and every heart that opens itself in prayer to the Prince of Peace
(Isaiah 9:5) makes of the world a place more open to the gift of peace."

I am, therefore, calling for a day of prayer for peace on Friday, 28th
February, that world leaders and those with influence may do all that they
can to work for the avoidance of war.

‘Ikon’ represents a group of young Christians who are drawn from
many denominations and traditions throughout the island of Ireland.

'Ikon' is deeply concerned about the current international crisis which may
lead to untold suffering for the people of Iraq, military personnel and their families.

In light of this Ikon would like to invite all Christians to join with them in a day of
prayer on Sunday 23rd February 2003.

‘Ikon’ will be providing a prayer space in the centre of Belfast for anyone who
