Easter 2004 - Diocesan Events

DIOCESE OF LIMERICK

The Holy Week and Easter Ceremonies on RTÉ ONE and RTÉ Network 2 this year
will come from Limerick City, centred on the magnificently restored St John’s
Cathedral, where the principal celebrant will be Most Reverend Donal Murray,
Bishop of Limerick.

A major feature of the ceremonies will be a Paschal Fire which will be
lit in the centre of Limerick on the morning of Holy Saturday. Burning brands
from this fire will be taken at sunset that evening in procession – one to St
John’s Cathedral and another to St Mary’s (Church of Ireland) Cathedral to
mark the start of the Easter Vigil.

The Paschal Fire will be sited in Lower O’Connell Street on the
pedestrianised area near Penney’s store. It will be contained in a metal
brazier specially made by Adare Ironworks and maintained through the day
by the local Civil Defence unit.

According to Fr Dermod McCarthy, Editor, Religious Programmes, RTÉ Television:
“The lighting of the Paschal Fire will be a very public symbol of the
arrival of Easter in Limerick. The whole country knows that the city
has been going through its own Calvary in the past year, and now the
Limerick community is getting behind this project, which has been undertaken
with the agreement of Limerick Corporation, the Gardai, Fire Brigade and
Civil Defence."

The fire will burn all day from 10.30 AM, in one of the most public spaces
in Limerick, where it will be visible to shoppers, motorists and visitors
to the city centre. Signs at the base of the fire will proclaim:
‘Paschal Fire - LIMERICK - EASTER 2004 - ' Christ Our Light’.

The event echoes the historical lighting by St Patrick of the Paschal Fire on
the Hill of Slane.
