No Earthly Estate - God and Patrick Kavanagh:An anthology
Over half of Patrick Kavanagh's poetic writing includes explicitly religious themes,
images or allusions, according to a new book. No Earthly Estate - God and Patrick
Kavanagh: An anthology by Fr Tom Stack looks at this important theme in Kavanagh's writing.
According to Fr Stack, Kavanagh's lines 'by turns swagger and genuflect their way
into religious terrain'. The sixty poems in this collection can be described he
says as 'pointing in a religious direction' either explicitly or implicitly.
The poems selected include Epic, Iniskeen Road:July Evening, Canal Bank Walk, If
You Ever Go to Dublin Town, as well as the three long poems, The Great Hunger,
Lough Derg and Father Mat.
Fr Stack offers a commentary on the spiritual content and significance of the poems
in the book which consists of a general introduction to the anthology, together with
particular introductions to the three long poems in the collection.
No Earthly Estate - God and Patrick Kavanagh: An anthology by Fr Tom Stack is
published by the Columba Press, priced €20.00/£12.99.
Reducing Stress and Finding Peace
Reducing Stress and Finding Peace is the revised and expanded version of
the bestseller Overcoming Stress and provides readers with an understanding
of the nature and causes of chronic stress, but also suggests a number of practical
ways of reducing it. The approach is psycho-spiritual in so far as it tries to
integrate medical and psychological insights with Christian beliefs. It does so
in the firm belief that the grace of God builds upon and completes our natural
potential.
Fr Patrick Collins CM is the author of the book. His previous publications include
