Bishops’ statement on education

On the second day of the Spring 2012 General Meeting of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the bishops issued the following statement:

The Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Ruairí Quinn TD, announced today his decisions on the patronage of new primary schools to be established in 2012 and 2013.  The Catholic Church did not apply for patronage of any of these schools because there is already adequate Catholic provision in these areas.  This is in accord with the Church’s statement Catholic Primary Schools: A Policy for Provision into the Future (2007) which stated that the Church would welcome additional forms of patronage where there was parental demand for such.
