Reception of the remains of Cardinal Cahal Daly in St Patrick’s Cathedral Armagh

The remains of Cardinal Cahal Daly arrive from St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast at Lower English St, Armagh at 5.00pm today from where procession by foot begins.  The Guard of honour is provided by Armagh City Scouts.  Procession proceeds via The Shambles, Cathedral Road and up Cathedral Avenue past Cardinals’ graves (Cardinals D’Alton, Conway and O Fiaich and where Cardinal Daly’s grave is already dug) to the front of St Patrick’s Cathedral.  The Cardinal’s coffin will be carried up the steps to the Cathedral door by young GAA senior captains from Armagh City (1).  Six priests of the Archdiocese of Armagh will then carry the coffin to the bier (catafalque) (2).

The Mass will be celebrated by Dr Gerard Clifford, Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh, who will also preach.   Present will be Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh; Bishop Noel Treanor, Bishop of Down and Connor Bishop Patrick Walsh, Bishop Emeritus of Down & Connor and Bishops Anthony Farquhar and Donal McKeown, Auxiliary Bishops of Down and Connor. The main Concelebrants will be Dean Colum Curry (Dungannon,) Mgr Liam McEntegart (Dungannon); Fr Brian Daly, Cardinal Daly’s nephew; Fr Eugene Sweeney, Administrator, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, Secretary to Cardinal Daly when he was Archbishop of Armagh; and Fr Eddie O’Donnell, PP, St Anne’s, Belfast, Secretary to the Cardinal when he was Bishop of Down and Connor.  Two deacons, seminarians at Maynooth, Stephen Kelly and Conleth Meehan will assist.

The choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral will sing.  Readings will be proclaimed and Prayer of the Faithful petitions offered by members of the Daly family and St Patrick’s Cathedral Parish.

The Funeral Undertaker will be J J McArdle of Armagh.  This is the fifth Cardinal that this family firm has buried in Armagh: Cardinals MacRory (1945,) D’Alton (1963,) Conway (1977,) and O Fiaich (1990.)

Lying in state will commence after Mass.  Various groups will participate from the Cathedral Parish as Guard of Honour.  Lying in state until 10.00pm, and on Monday, 9.00am – 9.00pm.  The Office for the Dead will be celebrated on Monday, 4 January at 6.00pm.   Requiem Mass on Tuesday, 5 January at 12.00 noon, celebrated by Cardinal Brady, followed by burial in Cathedral grounds.
