Pope Benedict XVI renewed his thanks to faithful priests throughout the world at the traditional Sunday Angelus in St Peter’s Square. He said he hopes that the figure of holy Curé of Ars, St John Marie Vianney, might continue to provide a nourishing example to priests in their personal conversation with God.

On Thursday 27 May 2010, Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in cooperation with the Irish Bishops’ Conference, hosted a seminar to mark the Year for Priests. Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, delivered the keynote address entitled God is the only treasure people desire to find in a priest. Cardinal Seán Brady made a response on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference to Archbishop Dolan’s lecture.

When teaching, the priest does not offer his thoughts to man, but shows the reality and presence of God who lives in the world. Benedict XVI reiterated this in today’s catechesis of the general audience held in St Peter’s Square before more than 20 thousand faithful.

18 February | Meeting with the parish priests of the diocese of Rome – ‘Lectio Divina’ of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

On Thursday, February 18th, in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, Benedict XVI met with the priests and pastors of the diocese of Rome for their traditional encounter at the beginning of Lent. The encounter was held in the form of a Lectio Divina. Commenting on a passage from the Letter to the Hebrews, the Pope noted that priests must be true men in order to bridge human and the divine realities.

Not to judge, but to save: This is the characteristic of those who follow Christ. Capuchin Father Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher to the Papal Household, noted this in this year’s first Advent sermon. The three meditations on Advent were based on the nature and duties of the priesthood, departing from the writings of St. Paul, as part of the Year for Priests currently in progress.
